The news media are among the most influential institutions in modern societies. Nothing reaches more people than radio, television, newspapers, and magazines, and these can be potent educational vehicles.

Authoritarian and totalitarian governments understands this well and go to great lengths to control and censor their press. In democratic societies, however, the media operate free of government control; they can provide coverage of important issues both in and out of other powerful institutions
